“Can I Come IN to the OUT Now?”

In to the out now“Oh” has been named by his friends because every time they see him coming, they all say “Oh”. He is a misfit alien from another planet that befriends a girl. I’ll spare you the whole story, but as an alien, he doesn’t really know how things work on earth and has some strange speech patterns. Think Yoda but different. As Oh is asking Gratuity, the girl, if he can be unlocked from the freezer, he asks her, “Can I come In to the OUT now?”

Its one of my favorite lines in the movie. And now you might be asking, what on earth does this have to do with Hope on Easter Sunday.

Well, I’m going to attempt to draw the parallel. As our pastor was preaching on Easter, it occurred to me that all our stories and tales are from the outside of the tomb. We watch as Jesus’s mother, Mary Magdalene and John mourn at the cross. We watch the disciples flee, scatter and hide in fear. We see Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus lovingly care for the body and lay it in the tomb.

Outside the tomb, there is fear, hiding, questions, disappointment, mourning, more torture and oppression. Outside the tomb there is instability, uncertainty and trepidation. Its a story without a happy ending. It is devastation. It all seems so….done.

Are you outside the tomb fighting your chronic illness feeling nothing but despair? Does it feel dark, uncertain, lifeless and lacking hope? Does your life feeling like you are always standing outside the closed door, the sealed tomb, disappointed to miss it yet again?

What we haven’t ever considered is telling the story of Easter from the inside of the tomb. On all accounts, it would appear dark, silent and gloomy. The stone is rolled shut and it would seem that is the period on the end of a sentence.

Can there be hope in darkness? Can there be hope in silence? Can anything of life or light come out of the dark?

Well, as a mom, I can tell you that being alone in the bathroom with the door shut is a privilege and blessing. Being alone in a dark room of silence, is at times a pure joy. How about if you were a seed in a garden? You would have to be planted in the dark soil in order to grow. Without the damp dark soil, the seed wouldn’t grow.

Without darkness, or a period of darkness, we won’t grow. That goes for us now too. We don’t grow in character when life is easy and hitting the status quo. When things are smooth and uneventful, we tend to just stagnate.

But in the darkness of the tomb over that first Easter weekend, there was also much growth in the darkness. It wasn’t desolate and empty, like devoid or bad. By Sunday, it was empty good. The growth that had happened in the darkness on Saturday, burst forth just as a seed does when it breaks ground to find the sun.

The goodness, light and HOPE came from INSIDE the tomb. Inside the tomb, the balance of potential energy was just brimming with opportunity to break out and spread its light.

So remember if you are experiencing darkness and uncertainty. There is no fear where there is hope. Hope is bright in the darkness if you just look for it and accept it.

You can come “Into the Out NOW” and let HOPE burst forth.

Happy Easter to you all.

Blessings and healing,
