To my parents defense, they raised me with a great deal of common sense and by the time I reached my mid-twenties I had learned to be a bit jaded and not fall for the lot – most of the time anyway. Nevertheless, in my teens and early twenties, I could be “taken” for just about anything.
In my high school job, apparently for months or years, I watered the fake plants in the office upon request. I’m not sure how long and how much laughter I provided, but it was alot. In that same job, as I was training in the darkroom developing photos and film, my “teacher” convinced me he had xray contacts so he could see better than I could.
Later in life, as an intern in a prestigious art gallery in London, it was my job to fetch the afternoon tea. Now this one, is largely due to my naivity and lack of exposure to the world…..but it took months for me to get straight that my boss didn’t take milk in his chamomile tea, just his black tea. That tea debacle supplied laughter and great frustration all around the office for quite some time.
When we are in a predicament of a subordinate position with a lack of knowledge, a chasm of vunerability is created. Will the people or person in authority or with knowledge protect, teach, nurture or expose and berate?
Now, I have no problem with some good wholesome fun, except when there is but one target being laughed at. Well, at least it taught me some growing up stuff I defintely needed. Or when the one target’s health and very life is at stake.
This vunerability mark can lead to success or failure in any given situation.
In chronic illness, the vunerability becomes a turning point for your health. Are your doctors helping, healing and succeeding or are they condescending, ignoring and failing? Your doctors are the very authority on which the success of your health, your LIFE depends on. There is no more vunerable place than to place your very next breath in the hands of a complete stranger.
Are your doctors healing or taking your health hostage? Just because they are kind doesn’t mean they know what they are doing. Where is their knowledge, their experience, their track record? I wouldn’t go to an ear doctor for my cancer. I wouldn’t go to my OBGYN to ask about my sore throat and cough. I defnitely wouldn’t go to my dentist for a pelvic exam!
Each doctor has their passion and their experience and their path. If their path and passion do not include Lyme, then keep looking and don’t let the door hit you on the way out. Find a doctor who has a passion for curing and healing this vicious disease. Ask for their track record and make sure they are available and accessible when you need them.
The other reason we find ourselves in such a vunerable place is that we believe and trust the person placed in authority over us. If you have known your family doctor for decades, great. But that doesn’t mean he/she knows snot about Lyme.
Do your research, get bold and advocate for your health. If you don’t have the energy or brain power (I didn’t at the time) then find someone who will. Get a family member or friend to do research for you and go to all your doctor’s appointment.
Don’t be the only chronically ill Lyme patient in your state left watering the fake plants.
For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul.
Discretion will protect you, and understanding will guard you. Wisdom will save you from the ways of wicked men, from men whose words are perverse, (Proverbs 2:10-12)
