When my daughter was young (this is an ongoing war to this day – we’ve just won a few more battles), she hated to calm down and get into bed. She had an excuse for everything under the sun to stay awake and come out of her room. She realized it was pointless to come to us with her excuses after a while, so she would just get into her own mischief by sneaking out of the room and playing in the bathroom, etc.
At the time, she had a little kid’s flashlight that was in the shape of a cow. When she wanted the light to come on, the cow would “moooo”. Even though it was a dead giveaway for mischief in the dark, she still stubbornly used that cow flashlight to sneak around after dark. We would hear a “mooo” from downstairs and know she was up to something.
We tried everything to tame this behavior – well everything normal. Then she wore us down into unchartered territory and we tried the cow bell. (Not trying to purposely stick with the cow theme.)
We tied a cowbell on her doorknob so we could hear her sneaking out of the room. I don’t know if this was subliminal from the SNL skit “I could have used some more Cowbell”, but we were willing to try anything.
Eventually it helped the behavior and we fight it less often now – of course because we discovered she was also a Lymie, we had to attack the health first and the sleep patterns are way better now.
But I tell you, she became the sneakiest spy and figured out how to get out of her room without tripping the cow bell’s clang.
In healing Lyme disease – there is no sneaking around it. No amount of 3 year old spy craft is going to work. There is no one size fits all kind of treatment that will fix it for everyone. It will not be fixed overnight magically either. Just adding in some more Cowbell doesn’t make it all better for everyone.
It takes creative thinking, persistence and an amazing amount of perseverance and gumption- a huge heap of gumption. Don’t you have that kind of gumption?
My book is not about a magic formula that worked for me so it will work for you. It’s about sharing in a journey – carrying the same burden. It’s a been-there-done-that that will encourage you to keep up the fight and keep-on-keeping-on.
Defeating Lyme disease is not just about finding the right doctor and the right treatment, it’s about finding the right dedicated support network and setting your mind and heart to the correct bold coordinates for healing.
Imagine with me you last normal day. The day before you remember having any symptoms or feeling sick at all. Do you remember not having the burden of such an illness, the memory of trudging through the quagmire of defeat? Picture it and hold that thought.
The rewards of conquering this illness are immense. Fight for it. Share the journey with others. Let other’s successes fulfill you while you remain in the battle. Let hope speak to you heart and kindle the flames of courage, commanding you to move forward.
I remember – I was exhausted, but I was ready. Ready to be done. Ready to be over it and feel better. Aren’t you?
Let’s not just get to normal again, let’s get to the top of the mountain.
