Mold – the Silent Killer

moldWe have personally experienced the dangers of black mold and the dangers of subtle mold over the past few years.

We visited some family two years ago Thanksgiving, and my daughter began to cough something terrible. At first, we thought it was just the coming on of a cold, but it deepened and resonated and wouldn’t stop no matter what we gave her to help. Add to this, that upon entering the home, she began to act like a maniac. Now, hear me when I say that I’m not that parent that thinks her children are perfect and can never act like children. I can tell you beyond a shadow of a doubt that she was acting as if possessed.

But if we played outside, or went somewhere else, the behavior would relent and the coughing would abate. Apparently we are not the smartest parents in the bunch, and it took us 2 days to completely see the pattern. After the second sleepless night from coughing, at 3 am I realized what was happening. We cut our trip short and promptly got in the car to drive home. Her behavior was angelic and the coughing stopped.

Hmm…we pondered on the road trip home, what could have caused that? After returning home, I began to research on the internet on a hunch. MOLD. The family members agreed to test the house and sure enough, tons of mold under the crawl space under the bedrooms. The black stuff and 10 other strains as well.

That paranoia led me to check out our house. I had always had suspicions that there was something here but could not find evidence of it by water, dampness or spots anywhere. I found a mold company that would investigate despite having no water to chase.

He found a window in a bedroom that had most likely leaked since installation 15 years ago down the inside of the walls, hence no water spots. He found a prior leak in the laundry room that had nearly rotted the subfloor, and he found mold covering the insulation inside the air conditioning coil blowing mold spores throughout the house ventilation system every time we turned on the AC or heat.

Yuck, double yuck. No wonder my kids allergies were so bad, no wonder their health was constantly challenged.

I wonder how many others are living in a gradual progression of mold growing in their seemingly safe home environment. This kind of gradual exposure is the most dangerous, because the health decline is subtle and hides the source. If there is no water damage in sight, how would you know to look?

If you have any kind of autoimmune disorder, are young with ailing health, or have a mystery illness that no one can figure out, then investigate mold. Don’t do it halfway, go the whole nine yards.

Our mold inspection cost $390 and worth every penny. We are currently buying a new house and we are having a mold inspection done before we close to ensure there is no hidden disaster awaiting us. No fooling around here, mold is a silent killer.

As if we needed any more reason to get out of a mold contaminated environment, the bible is explicit in how to deal with mold.

Listen to how the bible describes it.

On the seventh day the priest shall return to inspect the house. If the mold has spread on the walls,  he is to order that the contaminated stones be torn out and thrown into an unclean place outside the town.  He must have all the inside walls of the house scraped and the material that is scraped off dumped into an unclean place outside the town.  Then they are to take other stones to replace these and take new clay and plaster the house.

“If the defiling mold reappears in the house after the stones have been torn out and the house scraped and plastered, the priest is to go and examine it and, if the mold has spread in the house, it is a persistent defiling mold; the house is unclean.  It must be torn down—its stones, timbers and all the plaster—and taken out of the town to an unclean place.

“Anyone who goes into the house while it is closed up will be unclean till evening.  Anyone who sleeps or eats in the house must wash their clothes. (Leviticus 14:39-47)

The scripture goes on to say, that the priest (mold inspector) can only purify the house if the mold is gone. God is not fooling around here, if the mold is not gone, the house gets torn down and all its building remains destroyed and put out of town to the dump. When in doubt, check it out!

Blessing and good health,
