Getting Psyched Out – The Home Field Advantage

gffootballFor any of you who have played sports, you are completely familiar with the idea of “getting psyched out”. Its when you let the other team, the other fans, the scoreboard, or your own fears “get into your head” and mess up your game.

You can practice and be the best player on your team, but if you don’t have the skills to overcome mind over matter – then forget it. The real world will arrive and what your significant other said this morning, or the referree, or the coach or even your history test can get in the way of your skills playing full out in front of the crowd.

We’ve all seen it happen, the protoge who is destined to win, can’t live up to the pressure to be the best. The undefeated team gets beat out by the underdog.

In volleyball, we call each new set a “reset” because the score starts over. The same happens in tennis. Why does this matter, how does this help? It breaks momentum, it shifts back to neutral and the entire team gets a restart.

Everyone has heard of the home team advantage. How does this help? More weight on your side to keep momentum for your team.

All the sports talk just emphasizes how much the mind can control the body. What we think and how we think greatly impact how we behave and move and carryout our tasks or skills.

So how do we apply all this to our health and to healing? How do we achieve the home field advantage?

Well, we have the epitomy of home field advantage. We were made in His image. So that means wherever and whenever we go anywhere, we are still on our home court.  We are grounded and imbedded in Him because He created us.

So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. (Gen 1:27)

How about momentum, can we keep it on our side? The Lord promises are rich and abundant in scripture regarding our “momentum”.

Those who know your name will trust in you, for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you. (Psalm 9:10)

My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. (Psalm 74:7)

No good thing does He withhold from those whose walk is blameless. (Psalm 84:11)

I don’t know about you, but knowing I’m not alone, I’m not going to be forsaken, I am strengthened by Him – it all give me courage and the fight to overcome my physical self.

My mind, through the beliefs in my heart and the strength of God in my spirit, can overcome any physical ailment. It might not make it disappear or heal, but it can be overcome.

There are dark days – many dark lonely long nights and days in the chronic illness pit. In those moments the winning record will get established. Will you take on the illness and get discouraged or take one step at a time and not give up.

Momentum never has to shift to our illness or predicament. We have not being given over to darkness or oppression. If we give the illness the home court advantage, then hope doesn’t stand a fighting chance.

Let the crowds be silent for this disease – no one cheer, no one yell. Its day is done, it has no momentum, it has no winning season. It cannot psych you out unless you let it in. Don’t let it become a part of you, it is only visiting and then it will be on its way. It doesn’t belong, so don’t let it feel welcome. Don’t take your shoes off and get too comfortable because I am kicking you out soon enough.

And hey, Lyme, don’t let the door hit you in the @$$ on the way out.

Blessings and healing,
