I originally did this just as a Facebook post a couple of days ago in response to an article posted on Hollywood Life, but after the incredible feedback from my rant today, I wanted to give this a more widespread audience because its soooo important we stay informed and not let the uninformed media try to teach us about Lyme. Spread this and let’s keep the media in check and tell the truth about LYME.
Please help debunk these 5 “lies” about Lyme disease from this article about Yolanda Foster!! They are NOT TRUE!! Here are my responses.
1. Lyme disease can be spread by ticks, mosquitoes, in the womb and sexually transmitted. You do not have a bulls eye rash to get Lyme or remember getting bit to have it.
2. You can have Lyme disease for years before you have any “real” symptoms or ones that people normally associate with Lyme. So the whole “catching it early thing” doesn’t really apply to everyone.
3. Symptoms with Lyme disease vary by person. The Lyme and any co-infections you get with the Lyme attacks the weakest point in your body and that is different for each of us. Sometimes you don’t get typical symptoms so doctors won’t identify it as Lyme.
4. You can contract Lyme anywhere in the country or world for that matter. Lyme disease is not specific to one region or area anymore. Yes, in the beginning discoveries of Lyme, most cases were in New England and then Minnesota/Canada, but now there are cases everywhere. Don’t let someone talk you out of having it just because you are from Idaho or Kentucky or South Dakota or even Finland for that matter.
5. Lyme disease is rapidly growing – I would agree with this one. Doctor’s knowledge is also growing and more diagnosis are being done correctly to identify Lyme. Also, the grass roots efforts on social media are helping others spread the word for patients to be their own advocates and get treatment without diagnosis.
Be INFORMED and spread that information!!
