Have you seen faith lately?

African-ChildEach day I see road signs, texts, email, social media notifications, roadkill, grade reports, homework and recipes. I see owies, tears, defiance, friendship and compassion. I see rain, sun, and wind through the trees, but where do you see faith?

I saw it today in the eyes of a widowed father fighting for the very soul and health of his daughter. I saw it this week in the eyes of a 6 year old who recently lost his dad but is yearning to be baptized. I saw it in the eyes of a girl struggling with seizures and 11 years of sickness who just learned she has a brain tumor.

What a privilege it is to be able to be able to see faith in action in people both young and old. What a blessing to see faith the size of a mustard seed move mountains. Because you know what? There is nothing else left inside but faith when you face a big mountain. The very shadow of the mountain can crush your soul and take your last breath. Climbing and conquering the mountain can feel ominous and impossible. But with faith, all things are possible. (Matthew 19:26)

You see, I can sometimes feel alone in the faith walk, in this world. I can sometimes feel my steps get wobbly and weak and filled with doubt. Am I the only one who believes? Am I the only one who trusts? Am I the only one with faith? How can I believe when there is so much unknown? How can I have faith in the face of trials?

Then I see it in the Facebook post of a wife betrayed fighting for her marriage – there it is FAITH. I see it in the FB post of a woman fighting breast cancer and one just diagnosed. It is all around us. We cannot see God, we did not get to meet Jesus yet, we cannot see inside heaven, but we get to see HIM in others. We get the awesome opportunity to see God’s faith in action in others. That is something we do see, its very tangible. It is real because HE is real.

Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. (Hebrews 11:1 NIV)

I love how the Message writes it like this:

The fundamental fact of existence is that this trust in God, this faith, is the firm foundation under everything that makes life worth living. It’s our handle on what we can’t see. The act of faith is what distinguished our ancestors, set them above the crowd. (Heb 11:1 The Message)

If there is nothing else I can do today it is to look everywhere for the evidence of faith in others. Look for the faith that makes LIFE WORTH LIVING so it can make my faith grow and make my LIFE WORTH LIVING.

When you are fighting a chronic illness like Lyme, the despair and discouragement are thick like storm clouds. Faith is the anchor that will hold through the storm. This battle you are in is not just physical, its not just emotional, its not just spiritual – it is all three. All three must heal together.

Have faith. Be faithful. Reflect your faith in action.

Then I have to ask myself one simple question – is anyone I meet today going to see this faith evidence in me?
