On a quick getaway to see family this past weekend, we were awakened at 3:15am by a fire alarm in the hotel. Two hours, a new hotel room, seeing a guy arrested, and the fire department clearing out the smoke later – we settled in to go back to sleep. Fortunately for us, it was just a pan left burning on a stove that was really smoky. All the while, I was thankful for those smoke alarms because the guy right below us was the one who left the pan burning on the stove. Without those smoke alarms working, our room would have been the second engulfed by smoke then flames.
It made me begin to wonder about what things are lurking beneath the surface in our physical bodies and emotional selves. What things are bubbling there about to set off our own internal smoke alarms?
Sometimes, I tell my kids on a particularly trying day, that my head is going to pop off spin around with smoke coming out the ears if they can’t start behaving correctly (or stop bickering, or start listening…..) So, what is it bubbling under the surface of my emotions that day that could eventually make me pop and start smoking? My need for order? My need for obedience? My selfish to do list? My need for help? My need for control?
What was it bubbling under the surface for years while the Lyme was slowing was taking over my immune system. Was it stress? Was it co-infections? Was it mold toxicity? What signs and symptoms – cues if you will, was my physical body sending off that weren’t getting my attention? Low body temperature, low libido, low blood sugar, low thyroid, insomnia…..etc.
Our creator made our body systems so that we would have “signals” to detect a malfunction or a need to evacuate. Whether it is pain, numbness, nausea, dizziness, insomnia, headaches, weight gain/loss, moodiness, exhaustion or a myriad of other symptoms, our body is using those things to communicate with us.
Just like the smoke alarm in the middle of the night, those signals are trying to get our attention to take action. Do something. And if they are severe enough symptoms, do something now, do something drastic. Get help, get medical attention quickly.
Do you or someone you know have some of these symptoms that you are ignoring? Or do you or someone you know have some of these symptoms and the doctors are ignoring them?
Don’t ignore them. They are there for a reason. Don’t take a drug or medication that masks the symptom but doesn’t find out the cause or reason. You can find the cause. You can find a doctor who can find the cause. You can heal. You can live without signals and symptoms flying around your life.
You wouldn’t take you car back to a mechanic that put duct-tape on parts of your car acting up instead of fixing the real problem. Don’t do the same thing on your physical or emotional self. Find the reason. Fix the reason. Listen to your body. Don’t hide from the alarms.
We get one of these vessels to live this life, just one. Follow through and find out what is bubbling underneath the surface and get it fixed. If you ignore it, the longer you ignore it, the more your physical and emotional self will “burn” like in a real fire. More will get destroyed, more will get broken and devastated. If you catch it early, then it is a faster and easier (and dare I say cheaper) road to healing.
Let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance— (Proverbs 1:5 NIV)
