Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde or Sherlock Holmes?

jekyll_hide-783400If you are a parent either fighting Lyme yourself or helping your kids fight Lyme, you get this right away. Lyme and its healing battle has a way of taking you down to your raw self and bringing out the Mr. Hyde side of us all.

The war against Lyme is so raw that there is no screen or filter left of the basic survival emotions. One or two days in a giant herx is all it takes to growl at anyone around. The claws come out for me in just a few hours of struggle with my kids feeling sick or fighting emotions near a full moon or trying to pay the bills in a bad Lyme month.

One day I can cruise along just fine with my Dr. Jekyll Lyme knowledge and new found methods and expertise at solving the Lyme puzzles in our home and WHAM! There is the Mr. Hyde that puts my kids in tears, husband slamming the doors and me kicking myself for a lack of self control. Why can’t Mr. Hyde just “hide”? What is it about fighting Lyme that brings out the worst in us all?

I think for me, somewhere between Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is actually the persona of Sherlock Holmes. I have to spend so much time researching, reading, learning and analyzing that it turns me into Mr. Hyde.

Nothing is easy in this disease, nothing comes easy, there is no one sure fire healing modality for us all. There is no one book to read that tells all, there is no one doctor that has it all figured out (although I think mine was close). And if you do find that one doctor that fits you best, he happens to cost you out of pocket and live 10 states away.

We all spend time looking under rocks, digging on the internet and trusting the two in the morning gut feeling. When it all comes down to it, no amount of research will tell you everything you need to know, because they haven’t discovered all about Lyme yet. Look how long they have been researching cancer without a “cure”. Do we really think that research dollars spent on Lyme are going to help us in the short or long term?

But we are not alone. My Sherlock Holmes research is for me to share so you might have to do less. I used others research before me to get me farther down the path. Until this disease is more well known and acknowledged for what it really is, we will be off book, but still not alone. There are many of us in the army. Many who have survived and live to fight another day.

Don’t let your Sherlock Holmes research turn you into a Mr. Hyde to your loved ones and family members. Rely on others who have paved the way before you. Here are some of my favorites I go to when trying to find a way:

I take comfort in this – time passes. When we began this journey, there was hardly any knowledge, no where to buy organic, gluten free food and then time passes. Eight years later we have 5 grocery stores in town with organic produce, organic meat and tons of options for gluten free life. There will be more knowledge, there will be more doctors who know what they are doing with this Lyme thing. There will be more members healed in our army of warriors sharing good news.

Until then, forgive yourself for your Mr. Hyde moments and find emotional comfort in God and your journey. Mr. Hyde comes out when I feel overwhelmed and overworked. Take more off your plate and find a source for knowledge and strength.

Blessings and healing,
