In college at a summer leadership retreat in Michigan, I received a spectacular life altering gift. No, it wasn’t the racoons who came into our cabin univited each day. And it wasn’t the free square dancing lessons. As an artist, I take great delight in visual eye candy – not as in a male hunk, but in fall leaves, sunsets, migrating birds, etc.
One particular evening, our group hiked out to the sand dunes on Lake Michigan to get front row seats for a meteor shower that would happen later that night. We got much more.
It began with a picturesque stunning sunset over the lake. Just as we were done oohing and ahhing – the northern lights appeared. It is the only time I have ever seen them and cannot begin to describe the gentle way they brush across the sky and silently retreat. We were awestruck. As our silence perpetuated the night, the beauty of the meteor shower began and we lost count there were so many.
The visual beauty of that night is burned into my brain and I cherish the opportunity to have witnessed such a display of God’s grandeur like a headline concert with multiple encores. That night, that display put my awe into perspective. It quieted my soul and fired up my resolve.
In our normal, our mundane, our treacherous valleys, I pray you get a moment of beauty. A lavished display of splendor that takes your breath away and gives you hope. Look for it. Go outside. Get into fellowship. Help someone in need. Let God give you an opportunity to see His greatness.
And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” (2 Corinth 12:9)
In the weakness of chronic Lyme, weakness is evident and inevitable. Let His strength be made perfect. Ask Him to lavish you with His grace so you can experience a moment of beauty.
I pray for you all that…those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. (Isaiah 40:31)
