Are We At WAR?

War RoomSince the diagnosis and my battle with Lyme disease began, everything I look at and perceive in the world around me is seen through a new lens. So, it was with a movie this past week. My husband and I on a long overdue date night, went to see War Room.

Now, to anyone else, this movie is about a marriage and family, but to me, everything boils down to Lyme.

So, what if I knew now what I didn’t know before Lyme. What if I knew that the emotional and spiritual battle in Lyme were actually harder than the physical healing? What if I knew then that all three aspects of the “self” must heal together to achieve full success in healing from Lyme? What if I knew what God would strip away of me in order to heal completely? Would I have approached healing differently?

Yes. And I eventually did. As my physical body began to try to heal, I realized what else God was trying to do for me.

So, have you seen the War Room? Go see it with your health battle in mind. Go into it with the idea that this is much more than you can handle. Our pastor said this past Sunday that we must realize that we can’t handle any of it on our own. The burden, the battle, the war, the healing – it is all God’s.

Get a game plan. You can’t attack this Lyme willy nilly. If you are having trouble concentrating and researching, then ask a friend or family member to be your advocate. Make a plan. What kind of food you will eat, how you will change your sleeping habits, what things on your schedule you will eliminate, how will you care for your family or job while healing – etc. All these things must be decided and altered along the way based on your recovery and strength.

Get a strategy. You need a long term plan. Are you really going to go back to work full time at the same job? Are you going to fix the mold in your house or move? Are you going to go Gluten Free? Are you going to put in a garden to eat healthier? Are you going to get your kids tested? Are you going to stop running yourself ragged? What needs to give or be taken off your plate?

Get a team or a coach or a mentor. This Lyme battle is too tough emotionally and spiritually to go it alone. Some days the dark clouds are terribly thick and due to detox, no amount of prayer or “think happy thoughts” is going to fix it. You need a team praying with you, supporting you and not giving up on you. You need a mentor to sit with you and help carry your burdens to God on a daily and weekly basis.

Get right with the Lord. You can’t forget whose you are and who wins the war. God is in charge. God is on the throne. I can’t explain why you are afflicted. I only know that for my life, now looking back, God used the struggle and the illness to redirect my entire life and use it to help others. I’m not sure what he is going to do with the war in your life, but he can. Fighting Lyme without a spiritual strength and anchor of faith is something I cannot even imagine. I would not have survived without it. Just pray and seek him and see what happens to you.

I have worn out scripture cards that are still stuck in my bible. There were moments I didn’t have the strength to pray and barely to speak. I didn’t have the brain power to utter or put together a complete thought. So God gave me some scriptures to pray. I mumbled them, I cried them, I begged with them and I clung to them.

Let him show you what to cling to and what to pray.

I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.
Wait for the Lordbe strong and take heart and wait for the Lord. (Psalm 27:13-14)
