As I watched the news unfold the past few days, I was reminded of a time in my healing journey that I was oblivious. Not that I was uncaring or unconcerned or had a lack of compassion. I just didn’t have the energy. I just was trying to put one foot in front of the other and get out of bed. I was just trying to keep my head down from the weight of my health crisis and feed my kids dinner.
I honestly just couldn’t make eye contact with any more crisis. My crisis meter was already red-lined and I had no cortisol left to spare for anything else.
Can anyone else relate to this?
If you are fighting for your life right now, do just that. Turn off the world, turn off the radio, turn off the news and focus on healing. Focus on breathing and put one foot in front of the other.
You are not callous, you are not blind, you are not selfish, you are not lacking a single thing. People will comment that you are “really out of it” and “need to catch up” on what is going on because it is so VASTLY important.
Really? If you don’t survive this illness, do you think it will matter that you knew both sides of the debate on what to do with the refugees? Nope, not tomorrow in eternity will that information matter one little bit. So if today your focus is taking the 5 ounces of energy you have to tell your spouse you love him, or snuggle your child with a book before bed, or stand on your own two feet and take a shower – THEN DO THAT ONE THING.
The news cycle is 24/7 and will be there when you have time to digest it. Something in the world is always on fire, a government will rise and fall, a new reality TV show will launch, someone will be crazy and pissed off and attack someone else in senseless violence…..let it go today and tomorrow. It will all be waiting for you to digest or not digest when you are feeling better.
Don’t subject your body to more stress or sadness or reasons to lose sleep. Focus on one thing. Healing. Happy thoughts. Prayers. Laughter. Health and appreciation for it.
No guilt for not knowing. No guilt for not wanting to know. No guilt for looking away. You’ve got bigger fish to fry right now. Somewhere someone is taking their first steps again in physical therapy after a terrible accident. Somewhere someone is having a baby. Somewhere someone is burying a loved one. Somewhere someone just got a new job. Somewhere someone is getting married. Somewhere someone just recovered from a surgery and is breathing on their own for the first time. They are not watching the news either.
Each breath, each day is a gift. We are all mortal and will all die. Focusing on death removes the living from the life.
Live today to the full. Heal and live in the healing. Get off the carnival ride and get on another day. Let the worldliness of that life go for now. Its okay not to know who won the football game Sunday or that the Royals just won the World Series. So inconsequential because the most important thing that happened today is that you got to live it.
Just one more day. Focus on that.
Blessings and healing,
