I am His Favorite.

treasuredWow, you think. That’s sure a presumptuous statement. How could you be His favorite? Are you really more special than I am, or than everyone else?

Your feathers are ruffled. You suddenly think I’m an egoist and your opinion of me shifts to disdain. Hmmmmphhhh.

Wait. Before you get mad, before you think differently of me, stop. Whatever you are doing, read that title out loud. “I am His favorite”. Not me, but you, each of you. Read it again. It feels weird to say it out loud right? If feels weird to think it.

We are saturated with political correctness and fairness in our society to the point of nausea. We are not supposed to favor anyone. Not our kids, our neighbors, our teachers, our friends. We are supposed to be fair and equitable on all fronts. Watch the eggshells we step around here.

But, we are human. God is not constrained by the same rules. We must try to be fair, because in humanness we fail and tend to play favorites. God is not limited. God also never said he had just one favorite.

God said we all are his chosen creation. (1 Peter 2:9) We are each his beloved. (Song of Songs 6:3) We are favored by our Maker. (Psalm 30:5)

I am His favorite and so are you.

We were talking about this in bible study a few weeks ago and the concept blew me away. Profoundly knocked me right over. Am I so used to be put down that I cannot be elevated by my Creator? Am I so inundated by our societal concepts of fairness and equality that I can’t see the reality of the relationship I have with God?

One of the ladies in my bible study says she tells people that all the time. She tells them “I am His favorite.” She said she gets all kinds of reactions, mostly negative. The initial bristling you also had. Her response. Catch it because it is classic. When someone tells her that she is not His favorite, she replies, “Well you can’t tell that by the way He treats me.”

Amen. Ladies and gentlemen, Amen.

Can you tell by the way He treats you? You are a child of the King. You are a child of God. (John 1:12) He made you in His image. (Genesis 1:27) We are His chosen ones. (John 15:19) He loves, forgives, protects, provides and shelters you. (John 3:16, Psalm 103:3, Psalm 111:5, Psalm 91:1)

He is doing nothing less each and every day to show us that “I am His favorite.” He lavishes upon us good and marvelous things, even when the world heaps upon us stinky piles of garbage, God does not. His mercies are new every morning, great is His faithfulness.  (Lam 3:23)

I have another friend battling chronic illness and she wrote on her hand “I am Love” the other day and encouraged us to join her. It took me days to figure out why this was a struggle for me to do. I could write “be loving”, or “be kind”, but “I AM love?”. It didn’t seem comfortable

It didn’t seem comfortable for the same reason you were at the title of this blog. “I am love” presumes too much. Because as a human, I cannot be all the love those around me need, and I certainly don’t act in love all the time either. But, if I am God’s child, if I am favored and blessed and filled with His love? Well, then “I am love”.

The past few weeks, there has been a profound shift in my understanding of how God sees me and that in turn has enabled me to randomly say this out loud when He brings it to mind. I am His favorite. I am love. I say it out loud now and its getting more comfortable. He wants you to say it. He wants you to hear it. He has known this since the beginning of time. We are the ones who have a hard time wrestling this concept.

Think about it, ask Him about it. Am I your favorite? You bet, He will answer you. He wants you to know it. He wants you to believe it. He wants you to say it.

I am His favorite.

Blessings and healing,
